About Steve
Dr. Steve M. Cohen founded HR Solutions On-Call to give organizations without a full-time HR department a seasoned HR expert on call. He is often described as a “mess management” expert for his ability to resolve the people problems that put organizations at risk: harassment and discrimination complaints, misconduct investigations, toxic employees, contentious terminations, and boards or leadership teams at war with each other.
Steve has worked with businesses, nonprofits, ministries and public bodies with anywhere from 2 to 17,000 employees, across associations, banking, government, health care, manufacturing, education and service industries. He frequently serves as interim HR director or temporary chief HR officer for cities, counties, health departments and ambulance districts, leading HR staff, investigating complaints, closing system gaps and advising senior administration until a permanent solution is in place. He has also served as an expert witness on HR practices.
Before consulting full time, Steve spent more than 15 years as an HR executive and administrator, including Vice President of Human Resources at Retirement Centers of America and Director of Human Resources at Santa Fe Healthcare, after starting his career in hospital and long-term care administration.
Steve is also an educator. He served as Dean of the School of Professional & Graduate Studies at Baker University and as Interim Director of Affirmative Action at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC), and he has taught as an adjunct professor at Northern Illinois University, Rockhurst University, Baker University, UMKC and National College.
